| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| Theurgy in Iamblichus is neither an appendage of religious ritual to Neoplatonic philosophy nor a substitute for reason; it is formulated in response to an ontological problem concerning the participation of the human soul in higher orders of being. Within a hierarchical structure of reality, reason and the soul themselves occupy determinate ontological levels, so the insufficiency of reason for union with the First Principle concerns its ontological limits rather than any denial of its epistemic value. This study adopts a comparative approach, drawing on primary Neoplatonic texts and contemporary scholarship to analyze Plotinus, Porphyry, and Iamblichus with regard to reason, ritual, and the orders of being. The findings indicate that Iamblichus locates the necessity of theurgy within this ontological structure: ritual symbols and theurgic acts are not merely conventional representations or instruments of ethical preparation, but ontological mediators through which the soul participates in the divine order. Accordingly, the relation between reason and ritual is not one of opposition or substitution. Reason provides an understanding of the order of being, whereas theurgy realizes participation in that order. Iamblichus thus relocates theurgy from the defense of ritual practice to the ontological structure of Neoplatonism, redefining philosophy as both rational inquiry and sacred participation in the soul’s return to the First Principle. | ||
